Simtec is an independent materials testing company serving the construction industry, specialising in all areas of asphalt from production to testing material on site. Covering the Midlands region we have an established client base working directly with the regions quarries and private firms. Our services range from recording daily laying operations and carrying out pavement density surveys to conducting site investigations post laying. As part of our site investigation work we have our own diamond drilling rig which allows us to carry out core testing post lay and we have recently added CBR plate bearings to our services for inspecting the ground pre-laying.

Brief overview of the role

The Lab Technician is responsible for the testing and inspection of road construction materials. The purpose of inspecting and testing of road construction materials is to determine whether or not their characteristics, properties and quality meet or exceed the standards and specifications prescribed by our customers.

Vacancy description

As a Construction Materials Testing Technician, you will be responsible for testing road and pavement surfaces and giving an accurate report for its suitability.

Key activities will involve:

  • Perform testing in accordance with Standard General’s Quality Control System
  • Understanding test methods and procedures
  • Analysis of test data and corrective action to prevent non-conforming products
  • Documentation and Data Control
  • Care and Maintenance of testing equipment and Calibration of testing equipment.
  • Ensuring site testing is carried out safely and to the correct industry standards.
  • Ensuring that all records are completed adequately and to standards required by clients
  • Communicating with both internal and external clients and reporting any issues
  • Ensuring all test equipment is maintained and clean

Desired skills

  • Computing skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and also as part of a team.
  • Physically fit able to lift and carry bulk samples and equipment

Desired qualifications

  • Full UK driving licence essential as the role can involve working on site as well as the laboratory
  • Grade C or above in Maths, English & Science
  • CSCS card is an advantage but not essential

The Advanced Level Apprenticeship provides individuals with a sound knowledge base that can support them in undertaking further learning and development of their careers in material testing and related areas.
