Brief overview of the role

The role is based at the Pirbright Institute, The Pirbright Institute, Ash Road, Pirbright, Woking, GU24 0NF

The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. This laboratory technician role would be shared between the laboratory management team and the core science team and will provide the applicant with many transferable skills.

Vacancy description

(50%) Responsible for supporting laboratory management services which will include:

  • Responding to requests for repair and maintenance of scientific equipment, including logging data and work reports,
  • Keeping the equipment database updated ensuring all equipment has an asset number.
  • Accompanying visiting engineers within laboratory areas.
  • Assisting with audits where necessary

 

(50%) Responsible for supporting science, which will include:

  • Providing support to the Bio imaging department
  • Providing support to the Flow cytometry specialist

Future prospects

The apprentice would achieve: • A broad understanding of laboratory management in a Class II and high containment context, including health, safety and biosafety issues. • Proficiency in basic tissue culture techniques, basic flow cytometry and bio imaging techniques (preparation of samples for analysis including immunofluorescence and staining for cellular or viral markers. Preparation of general laboratory reagents) • Scientific equipment database management training.

Qualifications required

Essential

  • Must be over the age of 18
  • 5 GCSEs (Grade C and above or equivalent)- must include at least double science, maths and English
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills

Desirable

Personal qualities

  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience of working in a service environment.
  • Experience of working with databases.

Training to be provided

  • Level 3 Subsidiary BTEC Diploma in Applied Science
  • Level 2 Functional Skills (English & Maths), if required

Hours

37 hours Monday – Friday (Monday through Thursday 08.45 to 17.15, Fridays 08.30 to 16.30. 25 days holiday plus bank holidays and privilege days)

Pay

£15,075 per annum (24 month fixed term contract)
