In your role as a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, you will learn how to play a pivotal role in the development of positive educational experiences for children with a range of abilities in the school setting. Working with the support of qualified teaching and support staff you will contribute in the following areas among others:

Support for Pupils and for the school

  • Working with children on basic skills to close gaps in learning
  • Engaging in development and targets
  • Leading invention groups
  • Running after-school clubs/boosters
  • Be an effective model for pupil behaviour
  • Contribute to the health and well-being of pupils;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual pupils and groups
  • Being part of the everyday life of the academy
  • Joining the weekly training for all staff
  • Assist with special activities in the school within school hours (e.g. sports days, plays, concerts, open days)
  • Monitor effective working relationships with colleagues and parents
  • Recognise confidentiality, child protection procedures, Health & Safety, and the policies of the Governing Body

Support for the teacher

  • Supporting teacher to accelerate learning
  • Creating resources to scaffold learning
  • Assist with classroom resources & Lesson Preparation
  • Contribute to the management of pupils’ behaviour, both in the classroom and on the playground, as required
  • Following teacher plans to work with groups
  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Support the use of ICT in the classroom
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for pupils and staff
  • Assist in the presentation of display materials
  • Support teaching staff or senior colleagues with routine administration

Training to be provided

  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support of Teaching and Learning in schools
  • Level 2 Functional skills in English
  • Level 2 Functional skills in Maths
  • Level 2 Functional skills in ICT

Qualifications required

The preferred candidate will have finished their GCSE or other skills qualifications in English and Maths, though consideration will be given to highly-motivated young people willing to achieve a qualification in Functional Skills (English, Maths & ICT) at Levels 1 & 2.

Future prospects

Learners can progress onto a Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning and/or assessment against the Higher Level Teaching Assistant professional standards to achieve HLTA status. Level 4 qualifications in a relevant area, the Early Years Sector-Endorsed Foundation Degree, are also open to successful candidates.
