Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship – Miltoncross Academy – Portsmouth

In your role as a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, you will play a pivotal role in the development of positive educational experiences for young people in education. Working with the support of qualified teaching staff you will be expected to contribute in the following areas among others:

Support for Learner

• Support learning activities, attend to additional learning needs, and help in development
• Help with the care and support
• Contribute to the health and well-being
• Establish and maintain relationships with individuals and groups;
• Be an effective model for behaviour.

Support for the Tutor

• Assist with classroom resources & Lesson Preparation
• Contribute to the management of behaviour, both in the classroom as required
• Provide support for learning activities
• Support the use of ICT in the classroom
• Assist in the maintenance of a safe environment
• Assist in the presentation of display materials
• Support teaching staff or senior colleagues with routine administration

Support for the School

• Monitor effective working relationships with colleagues and parents
• Contribute to the maintenance of safety and security
• Review and develop their own professional practice
• Recognise confidentiality, child protection procedures, Health & Safety, and the policies of the Governing Body
• Be involved in extra curricular activities, (e.g. presentation evenings)
• Assist with special activities within hours (e.g. open days)

Training to be provided

  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in schools

If you haven’t already achieved a C or above in Maths, English and ICT at GCSE level you will be required to complete;

  • Level 2 Functional skills in English
  • Level 1 Functional skills in Maths
  • Level 1 Functional skills in ICT

Skills Required

• Good Literacy and Numeracy skills,
• Good organisational skills,
• Strong communication skills,
• Ability to work off of own initiative and also as part of a team

Qualifications Required

The preferred candidate will have finished their GCSE or other skills qualifications in English and maths, though consideration will be given to highly motivated young people willing to achieve a qualification in Functional Skills (English, Maths & ICT) at Levels 1 & 2.

The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship provides individuals with a sound knowledge base that can support them in undertaking further learning and development of their careers in youth work and related areas. These include:

• Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
• Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
• Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
• Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
• Play work or Youth work for those wishing to transfer to other areas working with children and young people.
