Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship – St John & St James Primary School – Hackney

In your role as a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, you will play a pivotal role in the development of positive educational experiences for children with a range of abilities in a school setting.

Working with the support of qualified teaching and support staff you will be expected to contribute in the following areas among others:

Support for Pupils:

  • Help with the care and support of pupils
  • Contribute to the health and well-being of pupils
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual pupils and groups
  • Be an effective model for pupil behaviour

Support for the Teacher:

  • Assist with classroom resources & Lesson Preparation
  • Contribute to the management of pupils’ behaviour, both in the classroom and on the playground, as required
  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Support the use of ICT in the classroom
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for pupils and staff
  • Assist in the presentation of display materials
  • Support teaching staff or senior colleagues with routine administration

Support for the School:

  • Monitor effective working relationships with colleagues and parents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of pupil safety and security
  • Review and develop their own professional practice
  • Recognise confidentiality, child protection procedures, Health & Safety, and the policies of the Governing Body
  • Be involved in extra-curricular activities, (e.g. clubs, activities, trips, open days, presentation evenings)
  • Assist with special activities in the school within school hours (e.g. sports days, plays, concerts, open days)

Training to be provided

  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in schools

If you haven’t already achieved a C or above in Maths, English and ICT at GCSE level you will be required to complete;

  • Level 2 Functional skills in English
  • Level 1 Functional skills in Maths
  • Level 1 Functional skills in ICT

Qualifications required

The preferred candidate will have finished their GCSE or other skills qualifications in English and Maths, though consideration will be given to highly-motivated young people willing to achieve a qualification in Functional Skills (English, Maths & ICT) at Levels 1 & 2.

Future prospects

The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship provides individuals with a sound knowledge base that can support them in undertaking further learning and development of their careers in youth work and related areas. These include:

  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Play work or Youth work for those wishing to transfer to other areas working with children and young people

This pathway also offers the participant a doorway into the teaching profession, offering the chance to work in a variety of educational settings with children of all ages. The experience gained from this apprenticeship in the practical teaching environment is invaluable.
