Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.


The Regional Delivery Partnership is a framework contract with Highways England for the development, design and construction of capital road projects that form part of the Regional Investment Programme during Road Period 1 (2015 to 2020) and Road Period 2 (2020 to 2025).  The Costain Jacobs Partnership were awarded two lots; Lot 7 (East Region) & Lot 8 (North Region).


This vacancy relates to Lot 8 for the delivery of 3 schemes along the A1 corridor in Newcastle and Northumberland, with a combined value in excess of £600m;


A19 Testo’s – Construction March 2019 – Summer 2021

A19 Downhill Lane Junction Improvement – Construction September 2020 – Late 2021/Early 2022

A1Scotswood to North Brunton – Construction March 2020 – late 2022

A1 Birtley to Coal House – Construction March 2021 – late 2023

A1 in Northumberland – Construction April 2022 – late 2024


Whilst flexible and remote working is undertaken, there will be a requirement to be present in our Blaydon or West Boldon offices for training, key workshops, to maintain contact and for team events.


We are recruiting for this placement position in the following location: Blaydon Hub,

Chainbridge Industrial Est, Chainbridge road, Blaydon, NE21 5AB.


What will I be doing?

You will work with the site laboratory team, giving you hands-on experience from day one as you learn all about site-based and laboratory testing for concrete, bituminous materials, aggregates and soil. You will learn how to use test results to improve performance and comply with customer specifications.

You will also develop the qualities and skills to excel in your career through a NVQ Level 3 Laboratory Technical Apprenticeship (Approved Apprenticeship).

It is a great opportunity for those who are looking for an alternative start to their career rather than full-time Higher Education or those who wish to change career direction into Materials Testing.

The role will predominantly be day working however the occasional night shift working may be required.


Personal characteristics/qualifications and skills

To be considered you must be interested in Science and have the potential to focus on accurate testing and commercial needs. You should also have an understanding of the level of commitment required from you to successfully manage working on site alongside furthering your education.


Minimum requirements

  • 5 GCSEs (C or above) Maths, English and ideally Physics or Chemistry.
  • hold a valid full driving license.
