Brief overview of the role
The apprentice will be trained to understand the importance of the calibration and measurement of viscosity in the viscosity world. You will be trained to carry out your daily laboratory tasks as well as recording and analysing data. Health and safety awareness in the workplace environment is central to the training programme.
Poulten Selfe & Lee Limited is a UK based manufacturer of quality glass capillary viscometers and a range of automatic viscometer systems. We are well established in the worldwide market of viscosity measurement and export world-wide.
Our facilities are located in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex where the departments include Electronic Assembly, Research & Development, Technical Service Support, Glassblowing, Calibration Laboratory & Polymer Testing Laboratory.
The glass viscometer tubes are produced to the highest standards and all tubes are individually calibrated in our UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Our laboratory also calibrates thermometers and reference oils that are used as viscosity standards.
As an apprentice in the laboratory, you will be trained to perform calibration of the various types and sizes of viscometers, oil blending, oil calibration & thermometer calibration. You will also be trained in performance testing of some of the instruments manufactured on site. An example of this is temperature stability test of a Constant Temperature Viscometer Bath.
You will be part of a team that is composed of three senior calibrators, a laboratory manager and a quality manager.

GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths, science and English. Further education in a science subject would be advantageous.
Demonstration of scientific understanding and good work practices can open opportunities for you to become a senior calibrator in the calibration laboratory, a laboratory supervisor, a laboratory technician in the polymer testing laboratory or a quality assistant. In the long-term, other opportunities may become available in other departments in the company.
