Brief overview of the role

A full-time position testing soil and water samples for organic constituents. These include petroleum hydrocarbons, PAHs, PCBs, pesticides etc. Technicians will initially be trained in preparation and extraction with the opportunity to advance to analysis and reporting.

The Organic Chemistry Technician role will initially involve routine preparation and extraction of soil and water samples with the opportunity to advance to more specialised testing. The successful candidate will report to the Organic Chemistry Supervisor and will be part of an experienced, friendly and efficient team.

Training will be provided in all aspects of preparing and extracting soil and water samples for testing and analysis of organic carbon.

Duties

Laboratory Testing

Routine laboratory-based testing of materials to in-house procedures. Testing may include the following:

1 Extraction of soils / solids, water and leachate for Organic contaminants of environmental concern;

2 Analysis of soils for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) using Combustion / IR instrumentation;

3 Analysis of waters and leachate for Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) using Combustion / IR instrumentation;

4 Setting up sequences and loading samples onto GC instruments;

5 Input of test data for inclusion into test reports.

General duties

1 Input of quality control data onto laboratory spreadsheets and interpretation of trends;

2 Cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment;

3 Conducting calibration checks of laboratory equipment.

Future prospects

The Organic Chemistry Technician role encompasses all aspects preparation and of soil and water samples as well as some entry-level analysis. This will provide a good grounding for advancing to a more senior laboratory technician role once the apprenticeship ends.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship there will be opportunities for promotion within the section or in other areas of the business.

Things to consider

Candidates should be able to commute within one hour.

No certifications or background checks required other than references from previous employers (if appropriate).

Candidates should be physically fit. The role requires walking and standing for periods up to two hours.
