Brief overview of the role
A full-time position testing soil, water and concrete samples for inorganic constituents. These include metals, pH, sulphates, cyanides etc. Technicians will be trained in all three stages of test procedures – preparation and extraction, analysis and reporting.

The Inorganic Chemistry Technician role will initially involve routine testing of soil, concrete and water samples with the opportunity to advance to more specialised testing. The successful candidate will report to the Inorganic Chemistry Supervisor and will be part of an experienced, friendly and efficient team.
Training will be provided in all aspects of testing soil, concrete and water samples from preparing and extraction, analysis, final reporting and interpretation of data.
Routine laboratory-based testing of materials to in house procedures. Testing may include the following:
1 Testing of soil, groundwater and concrete samples using classical techniques including gravimetric, distillation and titrimetric methodologies and use of ion-selective electrodes;
2 Testing of soil and groundwater for metals using ICPOES and ICPMS instrumentation;
3 Testing of soil and groundwater for inorganic parameters by UV VisSpectroscopy;
4 Testing of soil and groundwater for inorganic parameters by Smartchem discrete analyser;
5 Processing of test data for inclusion into test reports.
1 Input of quality control data onto laboratory spreadsheets and interpretation of trends;
2 Cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

The Inorganic Chemistry Technician role encompasses all aspects preparation and analysis of soil, concrete and water samples. This will provide a good grounding for advancing to a senior laboratory technician role once the apprenticeship ends.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship there will be opportunities for promotion within the section or in other areas of the business.

Candidates should be physically fit. The role requires walking and standing for periods up to two hours.
